Altar to Evicted Art was a site-specific performance installation
about the displacement of artists in San Francisco who were being
evicted from their homes and studios at a furious rate during the
Dot Com boom. I created a miniature inside-out house made from three
old doors lined on the outside with shelves. Raw materials, precious
and intricate ephemera that might normally be on the inside of an
artist’s home were meticulously arranged on the outside. I
appeared as the ghost of an artist inside the “house”
painting on the window panes until I became invisible. I interacted
with the audience from inside the piece and then occasionally would
emerge to create a ritual spectacle of displacement.
