In 2001 at the age of thirty-three I was diagnosed with
cancer, seven years after my brother’s death from
cancer, also at age thirty-three. Body of Free Radicals
chronicles my life during and after my treatment and recovery
from cancer through a series of artists’ books.
Inspired by the synchronicity of the of events and the
transformative physical and emotional experience that
ensued, this installation tangibly grapples with the metophors
of both book and body. This installation expands the idea
of a reading room while simulating the room I lived in
from treatment into recovery. My intention was to give
a more tangible, insiders view of cancer, expanding the
limited notions from “the dreaded ‘C’
word” to a more sacred, even shamanic expeience.
